LOWER LOXLEY HALL

Home to the Pargetter family for centuries, stately home Lower Loxley Hall, just two miles east of Ambridge, has Jacobean origins but was added to substantially over time as the year 1702, written over the door, indicates.

Most of the house is open to the public for tours and it also doubles up as a conference centre.

Guests can enjoy the toy museum in the old nursery, a treetop walk in the arboretum, a visit to the animals in the rare-breeds farm and a high-quality meal from local produce in the Orangery Café. The vineyard produces well-regarded wine which is sold under the Lower Loxley name – a ‘nice crisp white’ according to the experts at English Wine Lovers. It was awarded Regional Wine Status in 2008.

Lower Loxley Hall is set in seven acres of picturesque woodland and a further three acres of informal gardens. There is a cycle route around the grounds and visitors are able to hire bikes.

Lower Loxley plays host to a number of public events to support the running costs of the property, including December’s ‘Deck the Halls’, which has previously featured a German market and an ice rink, and the Easter Egg-Stravaganza in 2006. The most ambitious event to date was the three-day music festival, Loxfest, in August 2014, which was headlined by the Pet Shop Boys. Also on the bill were the Midnight Walkers, featuring vocals from PC Harrison Burns. He was omnipresent at the festival, later mingling with the crowds and being on the spot in time to arrest Fallon’s dad, Wayne, mid drug deal.

Lower Loxley is a popular venue for weddings, and it offers a number of options, including green weddings, which use only local produce.

Hillside is a two-house development just across the road from Lower Loxley, which was split into flats by property developer Matt Crawford. Milkman Harry Mason was one of the first residents, and he was joined shortly afterwards by flatmate-from-hell Jazzer. Other residents are probably glad that both men have now left, as Jazzer’s late-night habits would not have gone unnoticed.
